God Is Patient For Our Sake

God is waiting to show you the Way.

God is waiting to show you the Way.

5 They deliberately forget that God made the heavens long ago by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water.6 Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood. 7 And by the same word, the present heavens and earth have been stored up for fire. They are being kept for the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed. 8 But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. 9 The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.—2 Peter 3:5-9 (NLT)
God spoke everything into existence. Everything is held in place by the power of His word. Because everyone was “doing what was right in their own minds”, God destroyed the earth with the same water that had once covered the earth. Then He placed a rainbow in the sky as a sign to us that He would never again destroy the earth with water. Instead, the day is coming when He will destroy the present heavens and the earth with fire. We have once again arrived at that point where “everyone is doing what is right in their own mind” and not obeying the Lord. The Holy Spirit will not always strive with man and the time will come when God’s promise of destruction by fire will come. When? No one but the Father knows, but He is not bound by time, as we understand it. Our finite minds need eternity broken into small pieces so we can grasp it. That is not necessary for God. The One who is coming will come. While He is being patient with us, we need to be laboring in the fields that are white with harvest. It is not His will that any should perish and everyone will have more than ample opportunity to accept Him as Savior and Lord. But, we know that no matter how long He waits, there will be those who choose to go to hell rather than accept His free gift of salvation. Fill your lamps with oil, trim them to keep them burning and buy extra oil. Be alert! Be ready! The bridegroom is coming soon!

Living A Holy Life Is A Process- #8

God is waiting to show you the way.

God is waiting to show you the way.

18 Jesus said, “Do you still not understand? Surely you know that nothing that enters someone from the outside can make that person unclean. 19 It does not go into the mind, but into the stomach. Then it goes out of the body.” (When Jesus said this, he meant that no longer was any food unclean for people to eat.) 20 And Jesus said, “The things that come out of people are the things that make them unclean. 21 All these evil things begin inside people, in the mind: evil thoughts, sexual sins, stealing, murder, adultery, 22 greed, evil actions, lying, doing sinful things, jealousy, speaking evil of others, pride, and foolish living. 23 All these evil things come from inside and make people unclean.”–Mark 7:18-23 (NCV)
To be successful in living a life that is holy and pleasing to God, we must learn to think right. To do this, we have to learn to avoid all the bad thoughts that society offers us everyday. TV commercials, billboards, ads, and songs all offering us really bad advice about how to be happy, popular and accepted by our friends and neighbors. We must remember that the old “GIGO” (garbage in, garbage out) refers to all computers. Since our mind is the most remarkable computer there is, it certainly applies to us. We must spend time each day getting to know Jesus by studying His letters to us and meditating on the depth of His love for us. The thought is the mother of the action. So, we must allow God’s Spirit to purify our minds. The power of the Word of God is the only way to defeat satan and his mind games.

Being or Doing?

God is waiting to show you the way.

God is waiting to show you the way.

28 for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’29 Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising.–Acts 17:28,29 (NKJV)
One of Webster’s definitions for “being” is: the most important or basic part of a person’s mind or self. “Be” is defined as: to have identity with (someone). Example: She is my sister. God is concerned about our “being”. He even identifies Himself as “I AM” which could be defined to mean “I used to ‘be’, I ‘be’ now, and I ‘be’ in the future”. But with God, it is always “now”, so “I AM” encompasses it all. Verse 29 gives us a clue as to what we ought not to think or believe. If we put that into practical application, it could mean “we are not our work and our work (our “doing”) will not shape us into what God wants us to “be”. We can not achieve Divine Nature by “doing”. We can only achieve Divine Nature by “being”. We can only be identified with Jesus if we allow Him (His Spirit) to abide (“be”) in us and if we abide (“be”) in Him. It is definitely true then, that we have no life or being outside of Jesus Christ.

Loving and Serving

God is waiting to show you the way.

God is waiting to show you the way.

13 For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love. 14 For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you are always biting and devouring one another, watch out! Beware of destroying one another.–Galatians 5:13-15 (NLT)
God is love! Because of that love, a love that is incomprehensible to humans, He gave us His Son to redeem us from our sinful state. Jesus was obedient, even to the Cross, because He is also love. He is our example of how to serve others in love. If we focus on Jesus and His service to us, we find that our joy will be restored. Fulfill this one command: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and body and your neighbor as yourself”. Practice this by doing small acts of kindness to others each day. It isn’t necessarily something overt or costly. Forgive before they ask, don’t verbalize that unkind thought, smile and say hello to a stranger. Ask God’s Holy Spirit to prompt you and give you the words of encouragement that those He puts in your path need to hear.

The Ultimate Goal of “Right” Thinking

God is waiting to show you the way.

God is waiting to show you the way.

5 Let the same mind be in you that was[a] in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross. Phil. 2:5-8 (NRSV)
Having the same mind as Christ Jesus does not mean that we know everything that He knows. It means that we have the same attitude toward others and that we desire the same outcome from situations. It ultimately means that we humble ourselves under His mighty hand. That humility will cause us to want to please Him. Yes, even to the point of dying for Him. Not there yet? Most of us aren’t. That’s okay for now, God knows our hearts. Just keep striving toward the mark so that we don’t miss the high calling of Christ Jesus. Living a life of Holiness is a journey that is taken one step at a time. Whatever God asked you to do, you can be sure He has prepared you to go through it. He will go before you, with you, and be your rearguard. “Fear not, for I am with thee”.

Refocusing Our Thoughts

God is waiting to show you the way.

God is waiting to show you the way.

7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, beloved,[a] whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about[b] these things. 9 Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4: 7-9 (NRSV)
Matthew 12:43-45: 43 “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it wanders through waterless regions looking for a resting place, but it finds none. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ When it comes, it finds it empty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then it goes and brings along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and live there; and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So will it be also with this evil generation.”
We can’t just stop thinking wrong thoughts and leave our minds empty. As Jesus pointed out in the passage from Matthew, if we don’t fill our emptiness with something, when the evil spirit returns, he will bring companions with him, take up residence and our end is worse than the beginning. So, what do we do? Paul suggests that we focus on the things he mentions above. Think honorable, just, pure, commendable thoughts. We need to put each thought to a test to see if it fits in one of the categories he lists. If not, we need to cast out those rebellious/evil thoughts. We are not alone in this battle, we have the peace of God that guards our hearts and our minds. But we must keep practicing “right ” thinking to keep the peace of God.
