“Looking Forward”

13 But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world filled with God’s righteousness.  – 2 Peter 3:13 NLT

2 Peter 3:9-13 =NLT

One day and possibly in the not too distant future, this earth will once again be destroyed. Only this time, it will be with fire, the heavens, the earth and everything in it will be burned with fire and melt away. There is only one Person to turn to, if we want to escape this terrible destruction. We must turn to Jesus. We should be practicing that every day of our lives. In the smallest of trials and frustrations, we should be turning to Jesus now. That is how we build our faith and know that we can trust Him to deliver us from the wrath to come. If we can’t trust Him with a hangnail, how do you suppose we can trust Him with the future of our souls? When the doctor says, “you only have a few days”, where do you turn? We should practice turning to the Great Physician in the small things. Regardless of who applies the bandage, He is the one who does the healing. He, and He alone, can direct the medical team if the end result is going to be healing. Above all, praise Him that the day is coming when we won’t need doctors of any kind. We will live an eternity where there is no sickness and no more dying.

Only One Man

50 You don’t realize that it’s better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.” – John 11:50 NLT

After seeing Lazarus come out of the tomb, some of the people believed and others went to tell what they had seen. When they told the Pharisees and the leading priests, this group called a meeting of the whole Jewish council. The council was afraid that if Jesus kept doing miracles, He and His followers might become too powerful and upset the Romans. Then the Romans would remove them from the Temple and take away the authority they had been allowed to exercise over the Jewish people. Without realizing what he was saying, Caiaphas, the high priest for that year, prophesied that Jesus would die for the redemption of the Jews and other nations to make them into one body, the Church. But, since they could not sentence anyone to death, they needed the Romans to do that for them. God uses people to fulfill His plans and He has a purpose for every life. Some are willing agents. Isaiah, Moses, Daniel, David and the apostles are good examples. Others are used by God, even if it is unwillingly and unwittingly, to accomplish His purpose. Pharaoh, Caiaphas, Judas and Pilate are examples of this type of agent.

Be Holy For I Am Holy

.6 Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved. 7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and stood up to play.” 8 Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day. 9 Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents. 10 Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. —1 Cor. 10:6-11 NASB

God uses the bad examples that the children of Israel set to show us what we shouldn’t do.  They went back to the ways of the Egyptians instead of following the Laws of God.  Because of this, many of them were killed by snakes and many were destroyed. These examples should instruct us not to use our liberty to commit sins. Our example to follow is Jesus Christ. He has called us to a lifestyle of Holiness.  Even though all of our sins are forgiven, God will not allow His children to go on living sinful lifestyles. If we persist in living lives that are disobedient and causing strife in the body, we will suffer the same end the Israelites did. Paul gives us an example of a Christian having his lifetime shortened because of his disobedience.

5 I have decided to deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.–1 Cor. 5:5 NASB
God does not wink at sin, He still feels the same way about it and still deals with it  the same way. “Be ye holy” was not written as an afterthought. It was written under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and is still in effect today.

16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”–1 Peter 1:16 NASB
