11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh. — Romans 13:11-14 NIV
Over the centuries, Christians have received a lot of criticism because many have tried to predict the time when Jesus will return. Jesus specifically told us in His Word that no one but the Father knew the day and the hour. Even so, it is our eternal hope and we look forward expectantly for His return. It is certainly true that regardless of when, we know that the completion of our salvation “is nearer now than when we first believed”. We don’t need to waste our time and energy on trying to figure out when Jesus will return. We don’t need to waste out time trying to gratify the flesh which can never get enough. Yes, everyone needs to earn a living and take care of those things that God has made us stewards over, But, and much more importantly, we need to spend a lot more of the time God has allotted us here on earth in worshipping God, praising God and disciplining others to be ready at all times. We are never on neutral ground, we are in a war zone constantly. We need to fight the good fight clothed with the armor of God and the righteousness of Jesus Christ.
